Three New Classes At Kelly Mehlers School Of Woodworking

Kelly Mehler has opened registration for 2008 classes. Ill be teaching three classes on precision handsawing and planecraft, as well as building the Holtzapffel Workbench.

As of this posting, there are still places available. You can sign up for the wait list if the classes are full. Because people’s schedules are unpredictable, many people who are on the waiting lists get in.

Before I drone on about the classes Im teaching, I also want to point out that Larry Williams and Don McConnell of Clark & Williams will be teaching a class on making wooden moulding planes at Kelly Mehlers school on Feb. 25-29. I would take this class if I had the time in my schedule available. These two gentlemen are a living treasure, and the way they build these tools is without compromise or shortcut.

Okay, let’s move on to the self-serving portion of the entry. It helps me keep my kids in Nikes.

Precision Handsawing March 1-2

This is one of my favorite weekend classes to teach because I think there is so much to learn about sawing and sawtooth technology. The weekend will be spent learning about English-style sawing, although you don’t have to use Western tools to do it. You will also be making a traditional sawbench. It’s a good thing that I keep giving my sawbenches to woodworkers as gifts.

Building Furniture with Handplanes: June 14-15
I have created this weekend class based on the requests of other woodworkers. While many handplane classes concentrate on the bench planes, they neglect the joinery planes as well as how to use them to make furniture. This class will teach you how to sharpen your bench and joinery planes. We will use all of these planes to make a Shaker silverware tray.

Build the Holtzapffel Workbench: Sept. 8-13
This six-day class is going to be the highlight of my fall. Were going to build the Holtzapffel Cabinetmakers Workbench, the bench on the cover of Issue 8 and the bench I use in my shop at home. Ive modified the construction process slightly so well be building benches that can be knocked down and shipped back to your home when were done. The bench can be built in maple, yellow pine, or ash. Were going to source all the wood for you and do the brutal machining before you arrive so the first day well be gluing up the top.

If you have any questions about the classes, feel free to drop me a line. Also, Ill soon be posting my schedule with the Marc Adams School of Woodworking as well.
